Shackleton set out in the summer of 1999 -- their number was four. Allison Duke, Dee Kesler, Audra Kunkle and Tadas Kisielius had each been trying to reach the pole on their own for many years, studying and following the great explorers, planning their course and straying from it. With each attempt, they collected data and honed their skills, but the old adage became ever clearer: "The lonely road is the longer, or it has less people, or something."
